Here are this week’s power rankings:
(1) San Diego Chargers (1); Record: 3-1
Last Week: Won vs. Jacksonville 33-14
It’s amazing how surgically precise QB Philip Rivers is playing, as he makes up for what they lack in the ground game. But sooner or later Rivers is going to need more than 19 carries and 42 yards from his running backs.
(2) Cincinnati Bengals (2); Record: 3-0
Last Week: Idle
If they can win this Sunday night at New England, Cincy’s league-leading defense should have the Bengals in position to earn a postseason bye and be in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the AFC to the very end.
(3) Denver Broncos (3); Record: 2-1
Last Week: Idle
The schedule-makers did the Broncos a favor by giving them an extra week off following their (predictably) physically and emotionally draining game against Seattle. But the physical defenses will keep on coming with Arizona, the New York Jets and San Francisco up next.
(4) Indianapolis Colts (5); Record: 2-2
Last Week: Won @ Jacksonville 44-17
I have no illusions of the Indianapolis Colts. In Andrew Luck (60 of 80 passing, 763 yards, 8 TDs in the past two weeks) they have an amazing quarterback and they play in the NFL’s weakest division (crushed Jacksonville 44-17 and Tennessee 41-17 in the past two weeks) but have a very average roster surrounding their franchise QB.
(5) Baltimore Ravens (6); Record: 3-1
Last Week: Won vs. Carolina 38-10
Wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. (7 receptions, 139 yards, 2 TDs) got his revenge against the Carolina Panthers. His presence has made a big difference for Joe Flacco, whose completion percentage (59% to 63.4), TD-INT ratio (7/2 to 19/22) and passer rating (73.1 to 93.4) are much improved from 2013.
(6) New England Patriots (4); Record: 2-2
Last Week: Lost @ Kansas City 41-14
The Patriots are not a very good team. I’ve already outlined why, numerous times already, so I don’t want to rehash that again (no matter how much personal enjoyment I get from doing so). They are begging someone else to step up and claim the AFC East, but it doesn’t appear the Jets, Dolphins or Bills have what it takes, yet.
The Next Five: (7) Pittsburgh Steelers, (8) New York Jets, (9) Houston Texans, (10) Kansas City Chiefs, (11) Miami Dolphins
The Best of the Rest: Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns & Tennessee Titans
Put a Fork in Them: Jacksonville Jaguars & Oakland Raiders
