Around the NFL in Week 4:
* Packers Milestones in Chicago: Behind a strong effort from QB Aaron Rodgers the Green Bay Packers joined the Chicago Bears (732 wins) as the only franchises in the NFL with 700 wins.
Rodgers was 22 of 28 passing for 302 yards, 4 TDs (no INTs) and a 151.2 passer rating. He broke the 25,000-passing yard plateau in the game. It took the Packer passer 3,065 attempts to reach the mark, breaking the record for fewest passes to reach 25,000 yards through the air. The previous record was set by Kurt Warner, who did so in 3,076 attempts.
The Pro Bowl quarterback had some help, as WRs Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson both had big games. Cobb made seven receptions for 114 yards and 2 TDs, while Nelson had 10 catches for 108 yards and 2 TDs. The last time two Packers had 100 receiving yards and two scores in the same game was back in 1969 when Carroll Dale and Boyd Dowler did so.
* Luck Owns the AFC South: Indianapolis QB Andrew Luck was 29 of 41 passing for 393 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT and a 123.3 passer rating in the team’s win over division rival Tennessee. This was a week after he was 31 of 39 passing for 370 yards, with 4 TDs, 0 INTs and a 140.4 passer rating against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Luck is the first player in NFL history to have back-to-back games with 370-plus passing yards with four TD passes, a completion percentage of 70 or better, and no more than one interception.
WR Reggie Wayne caught seven passes for 119 yards giving him 1,029 receptions in his career, passing Isaac Bruce (1,024) for seventh place on the all-time list
* Rookie QBs Make Debuts: First-round picks Blake Bortles of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Minnesota Vikings Teddy Bridgewater each started in an NFL game for the first time on Sunday. They joined Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders as the second and third rookie passers to start this season. This is the fourth straight year that at least three rookie signal callers have started a game in September, which is a record in the Super Bowl era.
* Payback: Let go by the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith Sr. wanted some payback against his old squad on Sunday and he got it. Smith caught seven balls for 139 yards and two scores, as his new team the Ravens defeated his old team the Panthers, 38-10. He now has 429 receiving yards this season, the most by a player through four games who is 35 years or older. Carolina’s all-time leading receiver (12,197 yards) became the second player in league history to have over 100 receiving yards in his first crack against a team that he had at least 10,000 receiving yards with. In 2009, as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, WR Torry Holt had over 100 receiving yards against the St. Louis Rams.
* Turn Down For Watt: All-Pro DE J.J. Watt returned an interception 80 yards to the paint, a key play in the Houston Texans 23-17 win over the Buffalo Bills. The dynamic pass rusher is the first player in NFL history with 35-plus sacks (38.5), an interception return for a touchdown and a receiving touchdown in their first four seasons in the league. Yeah, he’s special.
* Off Day: In the aforementioned Packers-Bears game, there were zero punts, just the second time in NFL history that a regular season game had no punts by either team. The first time was a contest between the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers in 1992. A 2004 Divisional Round game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts also featured no punts.
