Biden Plans Quiet Week but Could Appear with Obama on Wednesday

Polls are showing that Joe Biden has a large lead, large enough that Donald Trump may not be able bounce back from it. But Democrats are being very cautious, as they thought the same in 2016, only to watch slackjawed as Trump was named the victor over Hillary Clinton.

But this isn't 2016. Trump is not even politicking at his rallies, only running through a list of his political targets he has a beef with. The few policies he does discuss are either bloated lies about Biden or what he says his administration has accomplished so far.

With two weeks to go, it seems Biden doesn't want to make any mistakes. He's playing it safe. He's not out there traveling city to city stumping. His schedule has not been disclosed, though, which gives Trump more fodder to say that "Sleepy Joe" is hiding out in his basement again.

Trump seems to be running scared. He's making many, many appearances after being cleared to do so after being hospitalized with COVID-19. And as an incumbent, he shouldn't need to. He hit two Arizona stops on Monday and had more trips scheduled to the battleground state of Pennsylvania as well as North Carolina.

The only time Biden left the house on Monday was to film a segment for "60 Minutes" that will air next Sunday.

One place Biden could show up would be in Philadelphia. Former President Barack Obama is scheduled to make his first campaign appearance there on Wednesday, with the pandemic keeping him away until now. If Biden joins him, it will be their first time to make an appearance together physically during this campaign.

A source familiar with internal discussions in the campaign said the details were still not finalized but that the plan is for the former vice president to join Obama.

"His former boss is right down the road, less than two weeks to go, he might want to say hello," said a source.

An official with the Biden campaign said he and Obama would not be appearing together until next week.

Other than that possible appearance, Biden is expected to spend most of his time not on the campaign trail and preparing for the debate on Thursday night with Trump

One source close to the Biden campaign said that because of the dynamics of his race with Trump, the former vice president doesn't need to "swing for the fences."

"All he needs to do is draw a contrast and speak directly to the American people like he did last time," said the source. "He does need to be prepared, though, because Trump is going to throw the kitchen sink at him."

Many believe Biden has much to prepare for this week after the debate late last month, where Trump threw everything he had at Biden and interrupted him throughout. It cost Trump in the polls, though, so it's believed that Trump will make an effort to not do the same on Thursday.

Biden is being prepared to be ready for anything Trump has. It's assumed that he will return yet again to throwing out disproven conspiracy theories about the vice president and his son Hunter.

"I'm not worried about it, this isn't Biden's first rodeo," said Mo Vela, a senior adviser of Biden's when he was vice president.

"You just finish the final 15 days with a dramatic and profound contrasting message. Contrast the different styles in leadership and integrity. Contrast how you have a plan to turn the economy around and address COVID, while Trump has no plan at all. Contrast, contrast, contrast."

Regardless of whether he follows Obama to Philadelphia, it will still be very beneficial to the campaign. This contrasts with Trump, who is only digging his hole deeper every time he holds a big rally.

"Every time Trump holds a rally, it's a reminder of just how reckless and irresponsible he is and how he doesn't give a damn about people's lives," said Vela.
