A recent article from Men's Health, claims that while some experts believe that US sperm counts are on the decline, researchers from Spain have suggested that diet may play a crucial role. After reviewing the results of 35 studies that looked at diet and semen quality, the researchers discovered that certain nutrients seem to be linked with higher quality sperm. Men who ate more omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins E, D, and D, folate, beta carotene, selenium, zinc, and lycopene, were less likely to have sperm with low-quality parameters. Similar low-quality sperm were found in men who diets higher in trans fats and saturated fats. According to the studies diets containing seafood, poultry, cereals, vegetables, fruit, and low fat dairy were linked to higher quality sperm. Researchers caution that more research that can study cause-effect needs to be done.
