The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do a great job at keeping the public informed about horrific viruses and bacterial infections like Ebola, Lassa Fever, and Zika. But there's one thing they have absolutely nothing to say about--"Disease X." "Disease X" stands for a new disease no one has seen before--or an existing disease that mutates into something deadly. It's likely that whatever pathogen causes the next pandemic, it'll be something we don't know how to react to. And when diseases like Zika first emerged, it's been impossible to stop these illnesses from rapidly spreading--with devastating results. George Poste is a member of the Blue Ribbon Study Panel on Biodefense, a group created to assess the state of biodefense in the US. He told Business Insider that it's been nearly 100 years since the 1918 influenza pandemic. He said, "It is inevitable that a pandemic strain of equal virulence will emerge."
