On Tuesday, George David Banks from the National Economic council resigned.
The senior policy official was informed he would not receive a permanent security clearance.
The White House faces increasing scrutiny over high-ranking officials working on interim clearances.
Banks had served since February 2017 as a special assistant to the president.
He advised on international energy and environmental policy.
Banks was informed by the counsel’s office that he wouldn't be granted permanent security clearance.
The White House council's office told Banks he would not be granted clearance because of his past marijuana use.
