The European Union’s envoy to Myanmar has raised concerns regarding the arrest of two Reuters journalists. in a letter to the country’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, the EU described the situation as “serious intimidation” and called for their immediate release. Journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were detained on Dec. 12. They are being investigated on suspicion of breaching the Official Secrets Act. This infrequently-used law dates back to the days of British colonial rule. The two are due to appear in court on Wednesday. It will be their second appearance and the prosecutor may request that charges be filed against them.
