Aside from troubles with Russia, disgraced former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s conflict of interest seems to lay more with Turkey. Flynn is being investigated for his role in a plot to forcibly and extra-legally effect the return of Fetullah Gulen to Turkey in exchange for $15 million. If Flynn was still working with the same Turkish interests when he accepted the post of Trump’s national security adviser, then he committed a felony, full stop. According to NBC News, his legal exposure may ultimately be determined by when the alleged conduct occurred. The timing suggests Flynn was actively engaged in facilitating arrangements that would go into effect once he (and the Trump administration) were in office. Optically, ethically, politically and legally, that’s a meaningful step beyond the charges born from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation to date.
