According to recently released data by the FBI, hate crimes in America took a turn upward in 2016. According to the data, most of the reports were “single-bias incidents.” data analysis shoes that 58 percent were motivated by race or ancestry bias, 21 percent were motivated by religious bias and about 18 percent were motivated by sexual orientation bias. The report is disturbing, but possibly not the entire story. Former FBI Director James Comey said earlier this year that in order to fully understand how to stop hate crimes, the FBI must do a better job of tracking and reporting incidents. “Hate crime is different from other crime,” Comey said in May. "...The end result is loss--loss of trust, loss of dignity, and in the worst case, loss of life.”
