Steve Bannon rose to the task to become Donald Trump's chief strategist. He has since taken a step back.

Bannon has since disappeared from the White House's controversial policy debates. He was said to become the most powerful man in Washington. Some even joked that Bannon was going to do the president's job for him.

According to a report via Politico, Bannon stepped back from his position for selfish reasons. He stepped away from Trump's administration and inner circle in the past few months. Several White House advisers spoke exclusively to Politico about Bannon's disappearance. They didn't want to reveal their names for fear of their jobs or angering a colleague. He's been noticeably absent from Trump's foreign trips and during his visit with French President Emmanuel Macron.

So, where is Steve Bannon?

He spends most of his time at the conference table in the office of the White House chief of staff Reince Priebus. Other times, he can be seen looking at his phone, according to a senior White House aide. He only plays a minor role when it comes to administration policy debates. Bannon has not been ruled out from the discussions.

Earlier this week, he attended a meeting of the NSC's Principals Committee, which included top officials from the government, according to a senior White House aide. Though the president banned Bannon from the NSC in April, Bannon has attended 20 percent of the Principals Committee meetings since then. Bannon reportedly argued with national security adviser H.R. McMaster over the troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. He warned him about the U.S. getting involved.

"He follows everything closely. He knows what's going on. I don't know if he has a feeling that strategically it's better if his hands aren't directly on things, but he's definitely in the fold on the legislative agenda," said Sam Nunberg, a former Trump political adviser.

Steve Bannon resurfaced thanks to the publication of Bloomberg Businessweek reporter Joshua Green's book, The Devil's Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Storming of the Presidency. It talks about Bannon taking control of Trump's campaign and the early stages of his administration. Trump is not happy about the book, according to the Washington-based insider. The alleged source said that Trump is "back to giving Bannon the cold shoulder" because of the book. Bannon is extremely exhausted "and doesn't look well" these days.

The highly-anticipated new book came out on Tuesday, July 8. According to Green, Bannon described House Speaker Paul Ryan as a "limp d--- mother----- who was born in a petri dish at the Heritage Foundation," according to The Washington Post. What's most surprising in the book is Bannon's profanity-laced mouth for the conservative movement. Bannon's disagreements and beliefs have been already ruining the party.

This book is just a thorn in Trump's side. It will continue to increase tensions in the White House and with the GOP. That type of destruction will happen with or without Trump. It's not just Trump who's ruining the conservative party. It's also Bannon, who's working behind the scenes, to ruin the party.
