There's quite a controversy surrounding Lena Dunham and the dog she rescued and four years later gave up.

She claims he was aggressive because of his past as an abused dog; however, the Brooklyn shelter she rescued him from disagrees.

This all started when Dunham posted to Instagram about her dog Lamby, noting people had wondered why she wasn't posting pictures of him. She noted that "honesty is my jam."

Her story is that in March, "after four years of challenging behavior and aggression that could not be treated with training or medication or consistent loving dog ownership, Lamby went to live at an amazing professional facility in Los Angeles."

She went on to explain that "Lamby suffered terrible abuse as a pup that made having him in a typical home environment dangerous to him and others — we needed to be responsible to ourselves, our neighbors and especially our beloved boy."

"Jack and I will miss him forever but sometimes when you love something you have to let it go (especially when it requires tetanus shots and stitches.) Someday I'll really write about the pain and relief of letting Lamby go off and really be Lamby, biting and peeing in his own mouth and all."

She's picked up a fair amount of criticism for giving him up, and a spokesman for the no-kill shelter where she originally got Lamby, Robert Vazquez, disputes the actress's version of events.

"When she adopted the dog from us, it wasn't crazy," he said. "I have pictures of the dog loving on Lena and her mom, which is weird if the dog was abused. It wouldn't be cuddling with her or be in the bed with her 'boyfriend' in the pages of Vogue."

"If Lamby had a bad past or was abused, do you think BARC would have adopted him to Lena knowing she's a new star and put her — or the dog — in that situation? We would have told her if the dog had issues. We are a no-kill shelter," he continued. "We don't lie about the dogs' histories because that gets them returned — and mentally, it's not good for the dogs."

Dunham then posted to Instagram again, noting the difference in opinion and said she "did what I thought the best mother would do, which was to give him a life that provided for his specific needs."

Her boyfriend, Jack Antonoff, then posted to Twitter to back her up: "Nobody on earth cares for or loved lamby more than lena. after her bit her father and her twice we found a trainer who deals with aggressive dogs who he now lives happily with, was a deeply hard decision."
