

On Sunday, Germany's Social Democratic Party endorsed former European Parliament President Martin Schulz, Chancellor Angela Merkel opponent in the upcoming national election in September. Since nominating Schulz in late January, the party has gained around 10 points in opinion polls and signed up thousands of new members. In a statement, Schulz said this week, "We want the SPD to be the strongest political force after the federal election so it gets a mandate to make this country better and fairer and to give the people of this country the respect they deserve."
