According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, Democratic lawmakers in California are saying that they want to reduce the stigma surrounding HIV by changing the law. Through a bill championed by state Sen. Scott Wiener, it would no longer be a felony for a person with HIV to have unprotected sex without disclosing their status, Wiener says, “When you criminalize HIV or stigmatize people who have HIV it encourages people not to get tested, to stay in the shadows, not to be open about their status, not to seek treatment."
