Stabbing Near California Mosque Results In Hate Crime Arrest

2016-12-12 14:56:47

On Monday Police announced that they had arrested 29-year-old John Matteson and are seeking another suspect in connection with the stabbing of a worshiper near the Masjid Al-Rasool mosque in Simi Valley, a town located about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, is being treated as an anti-Muslim hate crime, and is the latest in a string of incidents involving harassment and intimidation of Muslims. According to police Commander Robert Brill, the confrontation began when the suspect, who reportedly smelled of alcohol, insulted members of the mosque and threw a bottle that struck a worshiper in the face, prompting a fight in which the suspect stabbed another worshiper. The second man involved, also in his late 20s, is still at large. Civil rights groups have expressed concern over a spike in the number of attacks against Muslims, Hispanics, blacks and other minorities, since the November 8th presidential election of Republican Donald Trump.
