GOP Lawmakers File Suit To Stop NYC From Deleting Records

2016-12-06 10:51:43

In advance of the planned December 31 date for the city of New York to decide whether to delete data collected from over 900,000 immigrants, Republican state Assembly members Ron Castorina and Nicole Malliotakis, have filed a lawsuit against the city. The two have cited state public-records laws, saying in their lawsuit that destroying government records “due to the results of a federal election is against the ideals of the United States and has no basis in law.” The data collected comes from the city's municipal ID program, IDNYC, which allows homeless people and immigrants to obtain forms of ID. The program creators planned to discuss deleting the information at the end of the year due to the fact that President-elect Donald Trump has promised to deport millions of people who live in the U.S. illegally.
