Actress Shailene Woodley Writes Her Own Defense

2016-10-21 02:56:171 Oct 2018 01:53 AM EST

Divergent actress Shailene Woodley was arrested last week "for peacefully protesting the construction of the Dakota Pipeline in North Dakota." The controversial pipeline "runs within a half mile of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's reservation." There is concern that the pipeline could threaten the water supply and it would destroy sacred sites of the Sioux tribe. Woodley, who pleaded "not guilty" to charges of rioting and criminal trespassing, was released from jail earlier this week on bond. She livestreamed her arrest on Facebook and the video has had over 4 million views. Woodley has now released a statement for Time magazine explaining why she was protesting in North Dakota, stressing that the land belongs to Indigenous Peoples and that the environment is at risk of being destroyed. In her op-ed she writes, "I am not scared. I am not afraid. I am grateful, and I am amazed to be standing by the sides of so many peaceful warriors."
