A newborn girl is in the custody of child welfare officials after a dog found the baby abandoned in a plastic bag in Texas.
The infant is fine and currently at Texas Children’s Hospital.
“If it had not have been for the resident that came out to walk her dogs, that child may have laid there all night [and] possibly would have died,” said Harris County sheriff's Sgt. Gordon Trott told NBC station KPRC of Houston.
The newborn was found Tuesday evening near a fence by an apartment complex in Cypress, Tex. The umbilical cord was still attached.
“If the cord is not clamped before it’s cut, there is a risk of the baby bleeding out through the unclamped cord, which could’ve led to a baby’s death,” Tiffany McKee-Garrett, a pediatrician at Texas Children’s Hospital, told KPRC.
Authorities are looking for the infant’s mother. She may face felony child endangerment charge.
