Group Sues Detroit Schools For Rampant Illiteracy

2016-09-14 02:41:16

On Tuesday, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of seven Detroit students that accuses Michigan state officials of allowing high rates of illiteracy at several poorly functioning schools in the city. The suit says it is a violation of the children's constitutional rights.
The nonprofit group Public Counsel, which formed the proposed suit, calls it the first federal case to maintain that American children have a right to literacy under the U.S. Constitution. The case could result in enforced changes at some Detroit schools and could embolden those who might propose similar lawsuits in other parts of the country.
