Team USA Fab Five member Gabby Douglas won two gold medals by the close of Tuesday night’s women’s competitions, but that doesn’t mean everything is wonderful with her family.
Douglas’s mother, Natalie Hawkins, has filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which is not as severe as Chapter 7. She is almost $80,000 in debt. Hawkins said she filed in order to keep her Virginia home.
Hawkins is a single mother with four children, including Douglas, whose gymnastics training is very expensive, especially when she went to Iowa to train with an Olympic coach. Her income was only about $30,000 per year, most of which came from social security medical disability benefits and child support. She is currently in divorce proceedings with her husband.
The numerous debts come from miscellaneous bills, including $1,534 from Capital One, $4,350.23 from a student loan, $158.78 from Sprint, $413 from T-Mobile and $408 from an orthodontist in Iowa.
“It’s my story, it’s part of me. I’m not even embarrassed about it,” Hawkins said. “It shows that even though I didn’t like to have to do it, I’m glad there was something there for me to be able to protect my home.”
She has $163,706 in assets, most of which are her Virginia Beach home and 2007 Nissan Maxima, and is $79,754.14 in debt, according to the documents.
The Team USA mom began paying $408-per-month of the debt to a creditor in February, which should end in five years.
Hawkins is not the only Olympian mom to file for bankruptcy. Swimmer Ryan Lochte’s mother, who got divorced, lost her job and was on the edge of her home facing foreclosure in the past several months, has claimed bankruptcy, as well.
