New York, NY—Penn State offensive guard John Urschel was selected to the All-Big Ten first team by the coaches and the media. Not just a star on the field, Urschel was in New York City as a National Football Foundation scholar-athlete where he would go on to win the 2013 William V. Campbell Trophy. Scroll down to listen to the podcast.

Thanks for joining us. How’s it going today?

I’m doing well, I’m glad to be here. I’m really happy to be in New York, be a guest of the National Football Foundation. It means a lot to me.

It’s an understatement to say that you’re not the typical football player. How big is it for you to be recognized for this type of award and for this type of award to exist?

I’m grateful to be here with the 15 other finalists. We have some great student-athletes here, guys that I really respect, guys who really epitomize what it means to be a true student-athlete. I think this is something that should be shown off more. That there are so many student-athletes succeeding both in the classroom and on their field of competition just to show younger athletes that it doesn’t just have to be football. You can succeed academically and athletically.

Without getting into specifics of the Miami Dolphins bullying case, there was this notion that if you’re a smart guy, you’re not a tough guy, as if those traits are mutually exclusive…

Not at all. I consider myself a fairly smart guy…

Just a little bit…

Yeah, just a little bit and if you watch some Penn State football games I don’t think anyone will question my toughness.

Where does that notion come from?

I don’t know, but it’s a stereotype that I think we should really try to break. Because there’s nothing wrong with doing well academically and it doesn’t say anything about your athletic ability.

Talk about the season-ending win at Wisconsin. Was that like a bowl game for you guys?

Better than a bowl game. We really enjoyed being out there in Wisconsin. It was a great win for our football team. It’s a great way for the 2014 Nittany Lions to start their offseason. And I’m extremely excited to see what they do in future years.

Did you jump around?

Oh we jumped around.

The program seems to have recovered further and quicker than many anticipated. As a senior, how important was that?

I was very happy to be a part of this football team and to help carry Penn State through the fire these past couple of years. Coming out of the other side unscathed it means a lot to me to help contribute to that.

Your quarterback, true freshman Christian Hackenberg, how amazed were you that he was able to do what he did with so much put on his plate?

Christian, he’s a talented quarterback and he just really brings a great work ethic to what he does every single day. Let me tell you, we’re lucky to have him.

You’ve accepted an invitation to a pre-draft All-Star Game?

Yes, I will be training for the NFL Combine. I will be at the East-West All-Star Game and hopefully I will be playing professional football next year.
