Democrats Release Lineup of Speakers for Convention Next Week

Just because the Democratic National Convention is going to skip in-person festivities this year and former Vice President Joe Biden has been the presumed nominee since April, don't think it will be a dull event. The lineup of speakers was released on Monday, and there are plenty of regular folks who will be speaking as well.

"There are people from all parts of the county, all walks of life — different professions, different financial situations — all dealing with similar things. It's really the story of what's happening across American right now," said the program executive for the convention, Stephanie Cutter.

"It's different from 2016 where Trump was just a celebrity,"  she continued. "He's now a failed president, leaving everyday Americans in his wake. Those stories are the stories we're going to tell."

The convention is set to air from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. for four nights, starting Monday. It will be broadcast on television and on Twitch and streamed across social media platforms.

Biden's campaign confirmed that Donald Trump's 2016 Democratic opponent, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, will speak on Wednesday night along with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Biden's running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA).

An interesting speaker for the Democratic convention will be the former governor of Ohio, John Kasich (R). He ran against Trump in the 2016 primary. Former President Bill Clinton will speak as well. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) will be in the lineup as well.

Everyday Americans will be featured, too, showing how Biden relates to typical voters. While those guests usually fill non-televised spots, being mostly virtual and only held at night, the speakers will be confined to prime time.

The list includes Rick Telesz, a farmer from Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, a 2016 Trump voter who will now vote for Biden. Republican Jeff Jeans of Sedona, Arizona, was opposed to the Affordable Care Act but changed his mind after he was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to find insurance.

Paramedics Aldo Martinez from Fort Myers, Florida, a DACA recipient, will speak, as will DeAndra Dycus, whose 13-year-old son was shot and injured in 2014; Luz Chaparro Hernandez, a Milwaukee teacher; and cancer survivor Angie Taylor from Reno, Nevada, who wants to preserve ACA.

The pandemic has changed plans for the conventions of both parties. The Democratic convention was set for Milwaukee last month but was delayed a month. With the pandemic still prevalent, Biden is no longer traveling to Milwaukee.

The Republican convention was set for Charlotte and was then moved to Jacksonville, only for Donald Trump to pull out of speaking in Florida. He has suggested he speak from the White House, but that has been frowned on by both parties. The lineup for that event has yet to be released.
