Bloomington, IN—Was 2019 a Year Zero or just more of the same from Mike Locksley led teams? While a great recruiter who has connections all over the DMV area, Locksley is 6-40 in four-plus years as a head coach. Maryland started hot and was ranked as high as 21 nationally before the bottom fell out as they lost nine of their last 10 games. 10 of 22 starters return, so maybe turnover is good news as Maryland has recruited well recently.

1. How much time will Mike Locksley get to turn the ship around?

Locksley is just 6-40 as a head coach and his Maryland team went 3-9 last year after a 2-0 start that included a top-25 ranking. If 2019 was a Year Zero situation, then Locksley will have be ok if they improve to four or five wins. If not, how much pull does a coach who hasn’t put it together in five-plus years have? At some point Maryland is going to have to cut their losses, no matter how good of a recruiter they think Locksley is.

2. Can they find a quarterback and keep them healthy?

It seems like every year a Maryland quarterback misses a chunk of the season. Last season Josh Jackson played in parts of 10 games. No Maryland quarterback has played 12 games since 2016 when Caleb Rowe accomplished the feat. Jackson is among the Big Ten players who has opted out for 2020. If Maryland can find some consistency and health at quarterback, it could speed up the rebuild.

3. Can the defense improve?

Well, the only place to go is up for the most part. Maryland ranked 115th nationally in scoring and 109th in total defense.
