Trump Hits Back Against Black Lives Matter in Two Tweets on Thursday

There is one thing Donald Trump may not understand: while his base loves it when he goes after the Black Lives Matter movement, he loses the black vote and loses many white voters as well. It's great to pacify his base, but he won't win in November with them alone.

Yet, Trump continues to go up against the Black Lives Matter movement. He won't recapture that vote. Currently, more than 90 percent of black voters do not support him. That will be a problem on Election Day, especially with the presumptive Democratic nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden, doing very well with the African-American demographic.

Trump pushed the issue on Thursday with a pair of tweets calling out the Black Lives Matter movement, accusing one of its members of treason while trying to incite the NYPD to be against the movement.

He was already doing poorly in the polls. Once a furor started rumbling out of the anger from George Floyd dying at the knee of a Minneapolis police officer, Trump should have just quietly supported it. But he can't. He waited until the protests started, then blamed them for every looting and fire-setting incident, ignoring the many peaceful protests. And now with every passing day, the gap between him and the Black Lives Matter movement widens every day.

In his first tweet, Trump wrote, "Black Lives Matter leader states, 'If U.S. doesn't give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it.' This is treason, sedition, insurrection!"

This is in reference to an interview the president of the Greater New York Black Lives Matter movement, Hawk Newsome, gave to Fox News. Asked whether he believes violence is necessary to achieve the goals of the movement, he answered, "If this country doesn't give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it. All right? And I could be speaking ... figuratively. I could be speaking literally. It's a matter of interpretation."

Newsome said in the interview that the goal was to protect lives and not hurt police officers and finds those who criticize the movement's efforts hypocritical.

"We talk about uplifting and upholding the Second Amendment, but it seems to be the hypocrisy of America that when black people start talking about arming themselves and defending themselves, [that] talk is 'violent,' " he said.

"But when white people grab assault rifles and go to our nation's, their state capitals, it's all good."

"Black people riot, we are terrorist," he wrote, continuing the argument on Twitter. "White people do it and they are 'sports fans' celebrating a championship. Don't be mad bc I point out your hypocrisy."

In his time in office, Trump has accused 12 people of treason, and this includes his recent accusation of former President Barack Obama. Some of his critics believe his defense of Confederate symbols is treasonous.

The Lincoln Project, a pro-Biden Republican Super PAC, started airing an ad last week called "Treason." It shows the president's supporters carrying the Confederate flag and sometimes wearing it on their clothes as well.

In his second tweet, Trump wrote, "Told that @NCMayor Bill de Blasio wants to paint the fabled and beautiful Fifth Avenue, right in front of Trump Tower/Tiffany, with a big yellow Black Lives Matter sign, "Pigs in a blanket, fry 'em like bacon," referring to killing is their chant. NYC Police are furious!"

This appears to be in reference to a New York Post story that said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) wants to commission the same type of mural that is painted in front of the White House. In huge yellow letters, it says, "Black Lives Matter." Additionally, Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) renamed that area of the street, "Black Lives Matter Plaza."

The story explains de Blasio wants this mural on Fifth Avenue in front of Trump Tower. "Pigs in a blanket, fry 'em like bacon" was a quote from a 2015 Black Lives matter protest and is not known to be current. The organizers five years ago denied the intention was to incite violence and explained it was commentary on police who kill civilians.

Harking back to a comment from five years ago isn't going to help him with support from the black vote. In a recent Washington Post/Ipsos poll, more than 60 percent of Americans said they believe black people are treated less fairly by police. They think there is more work to be done for equal rights and disapprove of how Trump has handled the protests.

The survey also said 57 percent of Americans believe Trump is biased against black people, while 40 percent do not. He may say he's done more for African-Americans than any other president, but the poll said 92 percent of registered black voters would support Biden if the  election was held today.

It's just going to be really hard to win without nearly an entire demographic.
