New York Jets Off the Clock: Sixth-Round Pick Punter Braden Mann, Texas A&M

The New York Jets had nine picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, including five Day 3 selections. As we take the Jets “Off the Clock,” we’ll breakdown all nine of their draft picks, concluding with their sixth-round choice:

Round 6; Pick 12 (191st Overall): P Braden Mann, Texas A&M

Jets OTC: Offensive Needs | Defensive Needs | Mekhi Becton | Denzel Mims | Ashtyn Davis | Jabari Zuniga | La’Mical Perine | James Morgan | Cameron Clark | Bryce Hall | NFL Draft Links: Picks 1-8 | Picks 9-16 | Picks 17-24 | Picks 27-32 |

Measurables: Undersized for a punter, Mann stands in at 5’11” and tips the scales at just 198 pounds. For what it’s worth, he lacks explosiveness and straight-line speed but has pretty stunning change of direction ability. Mann posted a 4.13 20-yard shuttle and a 7.03 three-cone time which was better than La’Mical Perine.

Skill Set: Elusiveness aside, Mann was drafted for his booming leg. He set an NCAA record as a junior with 14 punts of 60-plus yards in a season. The Aggie averaged 51 yards that season and 47.1 yards per punt in 2019 for an impressive career average of 48.9. He can also handle kickoff duties and seven of his career 13 tackles came during his senior campaign.

Value: General manager Joe Douglas got decent value with this selection. Mann was the highest-rated punter in this class and many thought he’d go off the board in the fifth round.

Need: The Jets used a seventh-round pick in 2016 to select Lachlan Edwards out of Sam Houston State and he handled their punting duties for the past four seasons. As free agency approached it became apparent the Jets would not re-sign the punter who was looking for a new deal.

Mogollon’s Pick: It was very surprising to see Auburn offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho (No. 210) still available this deep into the draft. His lack of ideal size and athleticism probably means a shift inside to guard, but he has the talent to develop into a starter down the road.

Who Else Did They Pass Up? Michigan’s Jon Runyan (No. 192) was an All-Big Ten blocker with NFL pedigree, while it was surprising that receivers SMU’s James Proche (No. 201) and Ohio State’s K.J. Hill (No. 220) were still on the board. I also would have been very tempted to take Minnesota’s Carter Coughlin (No. 218), who was a productive edge rusher who is undersized but very athletic. A situational edge rusher who could provide production off the bench.

2020 Outlook & Beyond: The Ray Guy Award winner is penciled in as New York’s starting punter from Day 1. That’s how it works. Specialists are drafted to play right away. It’s win the starting role or get cut. If the Jets can get four years out of Mann on a rookie contract this will be a worthwhile pick.
