Trump Approval Rating Drops to Two-Year Low in New Poll

Things are really mounting up for Donald Trump. The difficult part for him is that he doesn't seem to work well under pressure. He's good at taking something that's working and making it better (and then claiming he did it all on his own), but he struggles when facing a dire situation. He's prone to striking out without thinking, and that just doesn't do him well.

That seems to be the struggle Trump has faced in 2020. He's been dealing with the coronavirus pandemic nearly the entire year. It's just not a good situation, no matter how you look at it, but he's struggled continuously to stay on top of it, going from ignoring it to blaming it on everyone but himself.

This has caused Trump to struggle in the polls. Most polls show him losing to the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate, former Vice President Joe Biden, on Election Day in November. Nothing he does seems to pick it up for him.

To top that off, the polling firm has disturbing news for him: he's facing the lowest approval rating he's had in two years. With the election just over five months away, that should be troubling for his campaign. They have a mountain to climb in a very short time.

The poll that was released Wednesday shows 42 percent of likely voters approving of the job Trump is doing, while 57 percent disapprove. This is a net 4-point drop since just last Friday when 46 percent approved and 53 percent disapproved. This is the lowest approval for him since January 22, 2018, when his approval stood at 42 percent and his disapproval 56 percent. On that day the country was in the midst of a government shutdown.

In addition to those figures, 30 percent of likely voters "strongly approve" of the work Trump is doing, while 47 percent "strongly disapprove," leading to a net negative approval index rating of 17 percent. This is the largest the margin has been since January 2019 when the Democrats were taking over the House and launching investigations of the Trump administration and his campaign.

Trump has had a difficult week, and that's his own doing. While Biden was seen being respectful, putting on a mask, and laying a wreath on a war memorial, Trump was seen golfing, eschewing social distancing and face masks.

When he's down, Trump strikes out at whomever he can find to lift himself up again, but that's not working well for him this week. He's pushed a conspiracy theory about MSNBC host Joe Scarborough murdering his aide when he was still a GOP congressman, and he's suggesting many evil things will happen if mail-in voting is allowed. Twitter came down and slapped him with a fact check.

To make things even worse, the coronavirus death toll has now reached 100,000. It's hard for people to erase the memory of him calling the virus a "hoax," suggesting people should inject themselves with disinfectant, etc.

This poll is not going to make things any better for the president. It's almost like kicking a man when he's down. He'll try even harder to get that approval, meaning he'll make more mistakes in the process which will most likely upset more people.

Trump needs to find a way to pull himself out of this and turn things around. The election is close, and it's the only thing that is while everyone social distances.
