Biden Calls Trump a 'Fool' After He Says Wearing a Mask Is 'Politically Correct'

If there were one symbol for life in 2020 up through this date, it would be a face mask, whether an N95, surgical, or DIY. Whether you do or don't wear one, it's become a symbol for your reasons for doing so. Some feel it's a partisan issue while others believe wearing a mask will save their life from the coronavirus.

This week those disparate views were reflected in the president and the man bidding for his office, the presumptive 2020 Democratic candidate, former Vice President Joe Biden. While Donald Trump has said very publicly that he will not wear a mask, Biden was seen wearing one on Memorial Day.

The former vice president left his home for the first time in 10 weeks on Monday. He was accompanied by his wife and dressed all in black, and the two laid a wreath at a war memorial in their home state of Delaware. They were both wearing black face masks, and his face was further obliterated by dark aviator glasses.

Conversely, Trump has announced the advice for the country is to wear a mask in public while also saying he, personally, will not be wearing one, while also admitting "it may be good" advice. After previously saying masks weren't necessary, he announced in early April that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention flipped their earlier recommendation and now suggest everyone wear one in public.

He has toured a mask manufacturing plant without wearing one, golfed while not wearing one, and been seen at other events not wearing one.

Trump's refusal to wear a face mask has energized his supporters to believe it's not necessary to wear one to protect yourself from COVID-19 and that the whole issue is overblown. It's viewed by some in his camp as a political symbol.

Memorial Day weekend was an interesting precipice for the country. Many people wanted to go out and celebrate, have get-togethers, and kick off their summers. Yet, the United States death toll is nearing 100,000, and state and local governments still haven't determined how to safely reopen.

Trump denied he had criticized Biden for wearing a face mask when he laid the wreath on Memorial Day. Fox News commentator Brit Hume mocked the former vice president's look as "absurd" and said Biden didn't need to wear one as he was with his wife and clearly six feet away from others. Along with opining about it on the air, Hume also tweeted his thoughts, which Trump retweeted.

Trump discussed his presumptive 2020 opponent wearing a mask at a Rose Garden news conference. He said, "Joe Biden can wear a mask, but he was standing outside with his wife, perfect conditions, perfect weather. ... And so I thought it was very unusual that he had one on." He added that he "thought that was fine. I wasn't criticizing at all. Why would I ever do a thing like that?"

A short time later Trump told a reporter to remove his mask while asking a question. The reporter instead offered to speak louder. "Oh okay, you want to be politically correct," Trump said.

Biden accused Trump of "stoking deaths" and explained that setting an example by wearing a face mask "projects leadership."

"He's a fool, an absolute fool to talk that way," Biden said on CNN. "Presidents are supposed to lead, not engage in folly and be falsely masculine."

After the controversy, Biden changed his profile picture on social media to a picture of him wearing a mask.

This is what it has come to: mask shaming a political opponent.
