Just when New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner might have thought his troubled past was behind him, the former congressman has admitted sending explicit messages to another woman a full two years after he was forced to resign from Congress due to a different initial sexting scandal.

The news comes as Weiner, a late addition to the race for mayor, leads chief Democratic foe Christine Quinn in many of the polls.

The revelations of additional lewd messages to an unnamed 22-year-old woman, who told her story to the website The Dirty, are sure to have an effect on the 48-year-old’s numbers.

Unlike 2011, when the politician apologized for posting inappropriate images of himself on Twitter, Weiner was joined by his wife, Huma Abedin, at a press conference in New York.

Most importantly, Weiner insisted that he has no plans to drop out of the close race.

“This behavior is behind me. I’ve apologized to my wife, Huma, and I’m grateful that she has worked through these issues with me and that I’ve had her forgiveness,” Weiner said while he read a prepared statement. “I want to again say how very sorry I am to anyone who was on the receiving end of these messages and the disruption that this has caused.”

His wife also spoke on his behalf.

“Our marriage, like many others, has had its ups and its downs. It took a lot of work and a whole lot of therapy to get to a place where I could forgive Anthony,” she explained. “Anthony’s made some horrible mistakes, both before he resigned from Congress and after. But I do very strongly believe that it’s between us and our marriage.”

“I love him, I have forgiven him, I believe in him,” she continued.

Briefly taking questions after the statements, Weiner admitted that some of the online activity in question had taken place as late as summer last year.

The 22-year-old woman claims to have messaged Weiner, using the alias “Carlos Danger,” in July 2012 and the months soon after.

“I was young and dumb,” she said. “I just want people to really know he’s lying when he acts like he has changed.”
