Adults Exposed To Children With Chickenpox Less Likely To Get Shingles

2020-01-23 15:16:351 Oct 2018 01:53 AM EST

Adults exposed to a child with chickenpox in the home are less likely to develop shingles. The vaccination still offers the best protection even if it doesn't provide long-standing immunity. Re-exposure to the herpes virus as an adult, after having chickenpox as a child, boosts immunity. According to UPI, immunity is boosted with repeated exposure but it does not provide complete protection. Infection with the varicella-zoster virus causes chickenpox. After this initial infection, the virus remains dormant in the body, and reactivation, sometimes years later, causes shingles.
