Study: Sleep Loss Linked To Deadly, Dementia-Inducing Disease

2020-01-09 00:59:01

A new study from Sweden shows that losing just one night's sleep increases the levels of a particular protein in the blood. According to CNN, tau is a protein that helps stabilize the internal makeup of brain nerve cells. In Alzheimer's disease, an abnormal form of tau builds up, forms 'tangles,' and causes the interior of the cell to fall apart. These abnormal tau proteins clumps are a key sign of Alzheimer's, frontal lobe dementia and Lewy body disease. In a healthy person, tau and other toxins in the brain are cleared away during sleep, akin to taking out the garbage. Losing sleep, or having disordered sleep in which sleep cycles are disrupted, can interfere with the brain's ability to clean up. Even in young, healthy individuals...over time, such sleep deprivation could possibly have detrimental effects. Dr. Jonathan Cedernaes, Neurologist and Study Author Uppsala University, Sweden
