US Army To Investigate TikTok After Congressional Warning

2019-11-22 06:08:511 Oct 2018 01:53 AM EST

The US Army is undertaking a security assessment of China-owned social media platform TikTok. The move came after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer raised national security concerns over the app’s handling of user data. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said Thursday he ordered the assessment after Schumer's letter to him. Reuters reports TikTok has previously emphasized its independence from China. However, Congress is still concerned about the security of the personal data of U.S. citizens who use the platform. About 60% of TikTok’s 26.5 million monthly active users in the United States are between the ages of 16 and 24. TikTok’s US general manager says the company’s data centers “are located entirely outside of China.”
