Senate Confirms Controversial Trump Judicial Nominee Menashi

2019-11-14 16:27:061 Oct 2018 01:53 AM EST

The Senate has confirmed Trump’s judicial nominee to the powerful 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. This is despite bipartisan frustration over his refusal to answer questions during his confirmation hearing. In a 51-41 vote, the Senate confirmed Steven Menashi, with moderate GOP Sen. Susan Collins voting against him. Menashi, an associate counsel to the president, faced criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike. He declined to answer questions about his work for the White House, reports Politico. He also refused to discuss his tenure as a lawyer at the Department of Education, under Betsy DeVos. Prior to his confirmation vote, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Menashi a “disgrace.” “He showed a breathtaking contempt for senators on both sides of the aisle. His record on race, women’s equality, LGBTQ rights and rights of immigrants should be disqualifying.” Chuck Schumer Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell defended Menashi and urged the Senate to confirm him.
