The Faroe Islands Are Closing To Tourists For Conservation Efforts

2019-11-12 23:26:22

The Faroe Islands is a group of autonomous islands located between Iceland and Norway and under the jurisdiction of Denmark. According to CNN, the area is a popular tourist destination for travelers around the world. Recently the archipelago has run into some problems with resources being depleted by frequent tourism. Now the popular tourist locale has come up with an innovative way to take care of their home and welcome visitors. An official notice on the islands' national tourism website reads "closed for maintenance, open for voluntourism." The country has made the decision to "close" its tourism sights and attractions during the weekend of April 16-17, 2020. Those who would like to visit the Faroes during that weekend can sign on to help with conservation efforts. The islands are looking for 100 volunteers to come to the country to assist with the caretaking efforts.
