High-Fat Diets May Lead To Brain Changes

2019-09-09 16:41:581 Oct 2018 01:53 AM EST

A new study suggests that eating high-fat foods can encourage brain activity changes that may lead to obesity. The study, published in September in Cell Metabolism, reports the findings of an experiment done on mice who ate a high fat diet. Researchers explained that the animals "experienced hypothalamic inflammation which caused physical changes to their microglial cells." The researchers found that the mice's microglial cells got smaller. These cells draw energy from food. Sabrina Diano, a researcher at Yale University and study lead author said, "We were intrigued by the fact that these are very fast changes that occur even before the body weight changes." She added, "There are specific brain mechanisms that get activated when we expose ourselves to specific type of foods."
