According to a report by Reuters, on Friday, officials said that, for the first time, New York City police will use a drone to monitor crowds gathered in Times Square for the New Year's Eve ball-drop celebrations. The camera-carrying drone will reportedly be tethered to the roof of a building and will not fly directly over the hundreds of thousands of revelers in the area, but will add an additional point-of-view alongside the 1,225 fixed video cameras police plan on deploying. Reuters reports that the NYPD will also use counter-drone technology to prevent any civilians tempted to fly their own drones through Manhattan as 2019 dawns.
