According to experts, Alaska is the most seismically-active state in the United States. A report from CNN says it's because the state is located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and joins the Pacific and North American plates. The USGS adds that one of the fastest-moving underwater tectonic faults in the world is in southeastern Alaska. In the last century alone, movement between the tectonic plates at the fault line has caused six earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater. Hence, this is why Friday's 7.0 magnitude earthquake near Anchorage is no surprise to researchers.
