At your dog's annual checkup, chances are your vet has talked to you about the leptospirosis vaccine. Leptospirosis, or lepto, is a disease caused by an infection with bacteria, reports MNN.com The bacteria are spread by the urine of an infected animal and can be found in water or soil. The disease can be spread from animals to people and the CDC states the bacteria can survive for weeks. It is spread by wild animals but dogs pick it up through open cuts or drinking infected water. There is a leptospirosis vaccination that is targeted toward several strains of the bacteria.
