Travel can be expensive. So, if you’re going to go some where, its best to make the most of it while you’re there. This is especially true when you’re considering going someplace far away … like Mars! According to Science Magazine, the U.S.’ plans for Mars should include more planning than obtaining samples, then returning. In a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the concern over the current Mars mission planning is that it is more a series of unrelated missions instead of a coherent program. Of particular concern to the NASEM panel is the communications infrastructure which relies on orbiters. The concern is that they may fail before successor spacecraft could be in place.
