According to a report by Reuters, United States President Donald Trump told NATO leaders on Wednesday that they should increase their nation's defense spending to four percent of their country's economic output, doubling the group's previous goal of two percent. A White House official stated that the president's remarks were not a formal proposal, as they came while he was urging NATO leaders to increase their contributions to global defense. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Germany, the EU's largest economy, spent only 1.2 percent of the country's GDP on defense in 2017.
