According to a report by Reuters, Germany's Foreign Minister Heiko Maas fired back at US President Donald Trump's accusation that Berlin was held "captive" by Russia on Wednesday. On the sidelines of a NATO summit in Brussels, Maas told reporters, “We are not prisoners, neither of Russia nor of the United States. We are one of the guarantors of the free world and that will stay that way.” Maas went on to claim that Berlin plans an 80 percent increase in defense spending by 2024, which would just barely bring the nation's defense spending up to the agreed upon 2%, despite having the EU's largest economy.
