According to a report by Reuters, US President Donald Trump expressed his hope on Wednesday that conflicts over NATO spending and trade would be worked out through talks with French President Emmanuel Macron. However, while speaking at the start of their meeting at a NATO summit, Macron stated that he disagreed with Trump's admonishment of German Chancellor Angela Merkel for being beholden to Russia over energy imports. Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas also shot back at U.S. Trump’s accusation that Berlin was “captive” to Russia, saying “We are not prisoners, neither of Russia nor of the United States. We are one of the guarantors of the free world and that will stay that way.”
