According to Politico, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is lining up votes behind the scenes to succeed Paul Ryan as speaker. Insiders say the California congressman is already asking key Republicans on the Capitol whether they will commit to back him as speaker next January. So far in public, McCarthy has said he's not campaigning for the job, saying it's more important to focus on saving the Republican majority in the House. However, a veteran Republican lawmaker who asked not to be named, recently told Politico, "Kevin asked me for my vote. He said, ‘Will you vote for me to become speaker? I want your vote.’”
