The Democratic Republic of Congo is confirming a case of Ebola in Wangatane
The town is close to the regional capital of Mbandaka, home to over 1 million people.
The country’s minister of health says the outbreak has spread to a “new phase”
This is largely because an “urban health zone” is now affected.
Ebola spreads by direct contact with body fluids such as blood, and has a high risk of death.
It kills between 25 to 90% of those infected, with an average of about 50%.
Control of outbreaks requires coordinated medical services, and community engagement.
Only 3 Ebola cases have been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo
The first batch of an experimental vaccine has arrived at the national capital of Kinshasa
To be used by “exposed health professionals... who have been in contact with confirmed cases...”
