Snap Inc. has seen its stock price drop by more than 50 percent since going public in March 2017.
The company also took a $40 million loss on unsold Spectacles, canceling a redesign.
So now Snapchat is inserting new unskippable ads into its app to gain more revenue.
Ads will be spliced into videos from its “Shows” section, not between stories and chats.
With unskippable ads, Snapchat may be paving the way for premium subscriptions,
similar to what Google does with YouTube Red, which erases ads for a low monthly fee.
Will revenue from ads offset the number of users the ads could potentially drive away?
If not, Snapchat may continue on its slow, downward trajectory.
