According to a report by Business Insider, the Pentagon defended ongoing joint military exercises with South Korea on Tuesday, amid reported threats by North Korea to cancel impending high-level talks with President Donald Trump. The Department of Defense maintained that the exercises with South Korea are "defensive" in nature. Col. Rob Manning, spokesman for the Department of Defense, said in a statement, "While we will not discuss specifics, the defensive nature of these combined exercises has been clear for many decades and has not changed." The North Korean government reportedly claimed that the US will "have to undertake careful deliberations about the fate of the planned North Korea-US summit in light of this provocative military ruckus."
