While it seems like People Magazine often chooses a movie star to be their cover guy for their "Sexiest Man Alive" issues, this time they went out of the box and chose a country music/television star.

They chose Blake Shelton.

He made his debut on the country airwaves in 2001 with a self-titled debut album and the number one single, "Austin." He followed this with 10 more studio albums and at one point had a streak of 17 consistent number ones.

Shelton has appeared in a handful of movies, both as himself and as a character, including The Ridiculous 6, Pitch Perfect 2, and The Angry Birds Movie.

But it's on reality TV where he made his mark. In 2007, he was a judge in Clash of the Choirs and Nashville Star, and in 2011, he joined The Voice as a coach in every season so far and winning five times.

Shelton is also known for his personal life. He married Kaynette Gern in 2003 and they divorced three years later, around the same time he met fellow country singer Miranda Lambert. They married in 2011, and in 2015 they announced they were divorcing.

Fellow Voice judge Gwen Stefani was going through a divorce at the same time, and the two started a romance that is still continuing.

"People are going to hate me over this," Shelton predicted, regarding becoming People's cover guy for the special issue. "Wow, we've run out of celebrities with both eyes ... we're just down to somebody who's somewhat symmetrical. That must be all you had left to look for."

He continued to be self-deprecating as he added, "I'm owning this moment. I've been ugly my whole life. If I can be sexy for a year, I'm taking it."

According to him, it was Stefani who urged him to accept his role as "Sexiest Man Alive." He posted the cover on Twitter and captioned it, "Thank you @people!!!! Don't hate me because I'm beautiful."

It should add to the fake feud he has going on with The Voice co-star Adam Levine, as he took the "Sexiest Man Alive" title four years ago.

Stefani added in a separate interview that she thinks Shelton is deserving of the title.

"He's perfect for it," she said. "Somebody that is funny and has a sense of humor is sexy — that's the number one thing."

She added that he "doesn't even know how cute he is. [He's] cocky but only because he's a cowboy."
