According to a report by Mother Nature Network, several new studies have shown an alarming amount of microplastics contained in sea salts, which have commonly come to be thought of as a 'natural' alternative to refined varieties. A new study from East China Normal University found that one kilogram of sea salt can contain as many as 600 microplastics. Mother Nature Network points out that the problem is part of a larger epidemic of plastic pollution, which tends to accumulate in the earth's oceans and waterways. The article warns that unless plastic production is curbed significantly, plastic pollution could soon become one of the largest health threats facing humans.
