On Monday, an official claimed that Myanmar has no military ties with North Korea, while a U.S. diplomat responsible for North Korea arrived in the country for talks in which he was likely to seek assurances on efforts to isolate it. Ambassador Joseph Yun met Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and the military's commander in chief in the capital, Naypyitaw. The United States has asked Southeast Asian countries to do more to isolate North Korea, with their efforts increasing after the country's July 4 ballistic missile test. Yun's trip came after concerns in Washington that Myanmar's army, which used to have ties with North Korea, continues to support Kim Jong Il's regime.
