A new trailer for Blade Runner 2049 is set to debut tomorrow, July 17th, 2017 on Good Morning America, star Ryan Gosling revealed in a tweet. The original Blade Runner was released in 1982 with a divisive reception, but over the years – and the reveal of numerous different cut – it has come to be considered one of the most important science fiction films ever made.
Set 30 years after the events of the original Blade Runner, the sequel stars Ryan Gosling as a new blade runner who makes a discovery that leads him on a search for the original film’s hero, Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for three decades. In the first film, Deckard was sent on a mission to eliminate a group of replicants – artificial humans designed to do off-world work – who were loose on earth, but he disappeared after falling in love with one of the targets he was hunting.Ryan Gosling tweeted that a new trailer for Blade Runner 2049 is set to run tomorrow on ABC’s Good Morning America, revealing a brief teaser to give a taste of what’s to come.Ridley Scott directed the groundbreaking original Blade Runner, setting a new standard for production design and visual effects, but he stepped aside for the sequel, 2049, which is directed by Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve. Ryan Gosling has indicated in various interviews that though the sequel remains faithful to the original in many ways, it’s in some ways “more brutal” than the first film. Producer Ridley Scott says we can expect the sequel to answer the long-running question of whether Deckard himself is a replicant, a question that became a prominent debate after Scott altered the original movie by adding new material for his director’s cut.The first trailer for Blade Runner 2049 dropped back in May and gave a taste of the film’s gorgeous, neon-lit visuals and eye-popping design. More new footage was put on display in a featurette exploring the film’s practical effects and world. Considering the original film’s reputation as one of the classics of science fiction, the sequel has a lot to live up to, a fact director Villeneuve is keenly aware of. Among the new film’s more intriguing elements is the presence of the always-interesting Jared Leto, who plays a replicant manufacturer who goes by the name of Wallace.Blade Runner 2049 also stars Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Ana De Armas, Jared Leto, Edward James Olmos, Lennie James and MacKenzie Davis. If the movie takes off, Ridley Scott says he wants to continue the series as an expanded universe in the same style as Alien.
