The Tony Awards broadcast is once again going in a completely different direction.

This year's host will be someone completely new to the position for the third year in a row. The honor is going to actor Kevin Spacey.

The Tonys are to the theater world what the Oscars are to the film community and what the Emmys are to the television community. For its 71st awards, they have announced that Spacey will be hosting.

Last year the awards were hosted by James Corden, a great fit since he's a television host and has spent a great deal of time in theater. The late night host combined with it being a great year for Hamilton meant a 35 percent increase from the year before and its largest audience since 2001.

The year before that it was two more theater vets who hosted: Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming. In the years before them, Hugh Jackman hosted many times, as did Neil Patrick Harris. Sean Hayes and Whoopi Goldberg have hosted in recent years as well.

Spacey, 57, started his career in the theater and then moved on to movies and TV. He's appeared in The Usual Suspects, Seven, L.A. Confidential, American Beauty, and Beyond the Sea and since 2013 has starred in House of Cards on TV. He made a return to theater in 1991 to appear in Lost in Yonkers and won a Tony Award for the role. He has also won Academy Awards for his work in The Usual Suspects and American Beauty.

"I was their second choice for Usual Suspects, fourth choice for American Beauty and 15th choice to host this year's Tony Awards. I think my career is definitely going in the right direction," Spacey quipped. "Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down."

The Tony Awards telecast this year will make a return to Radio City Music Hall where they have often held it over the years. From time to time they have moved the venue, but they always seem to return to Radio City Music Hall.

The awards show will air on June 11.
