While visiting Israel to film a travel show, actor David Arquette attended a bar mitzvah ceremony for a local boy and decided to have one of his own, as well.
The 41-year-old actor, who recently separated from Friends actress Courtney Cox, celebrated his bar mitzvah Monday at Jerusalem’s Western Wall, according to VozIzNeiaz.com. The sacred place is considered the “holiest place for Jews to pray.”
Arquette’s father became a Muslim, but his mother was born Jewish, and therefore under religious law, he and his four siblings—Rosanna, Richmond, Patricia and Alexis (born Robert)—are also Jewish.
“He was very emotional, saying he was happy to be part of the chain of the Jewish people,” said Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, who conducted Arquette’s ceremony. “I’m very pleased to see a man who is returning to his roots.”
Arquette was filming an episode of Mile High, a program that airs on the Travel Channel. His segment will showcase Israeli tourism.
Along with Jerusalem, the Scream star also visited Tel Aviv on Sunday, according to The Jewish Press. He is also set to film at the Dead Sea and Judean Desert on Tuesday.
